In brief

The problem
School volunteering often means a single afternoon, logged and forgotten. Meanwhile a boarding school throws away surplus meals and washed towels every week, a few kilometres from children's centres, isolated seniors and animal shelters that need them.
The spark
After serving as the Grade 10 representative, Wonjun became president and started proposing activities that matched school resources to specific local needs, so each programme could sustain itself.
The outcome
146 volunteer hours in Grade 10 alone, a commendation from an NGO with UN ECOSOC special consultative status, and an NGO partnership supporting children with developmental disabilities.

Method

How it was done, step by step.

  1. 1Surplus mealsDelivered school surplus meals to multicultural children's care centres and isolated seniors, March to May 2024, later formalised with an agreement covering hygiene and delivery.
  2. 2Space-debris classDesigned and taught a 10-hour space-science programme at a multicultural care centre: children built mock debris-cleanup systems with magnets, nets, harpoons and drag sails.
  3. 3Towels for sheltersCollected and donated washed dormitory towels to animal shelters.
  4. 4CampaignsA school-violence-prevention flea market and nonviolence signature campaign, anti-smoking campaigns with the public health centre, and CPR education with the local fire station.
  5. 5Children's campsSupported a water-ski summer camp for vulnerable and abuse-affected children with the Bright Society International Club Korea HQ.

01Spring 2024

Food that would have been thrown away

The first programme was the simplest: the school cooked more than it served. From March to May 2024 the club delivered surplus meals to multicultural children's centres and to seniors living alone. Making it last meant solving the boring parts, hygiene and delivery, which became a formal agreement.

02Teaching

Cleaning up orbit with magnets and nets

At a multicultural care centre Wonjun designed a ten-hour programme on the origin of the universe and the problem of space debris. The children built model cleanup systems using magnets, nets, harpoons and drag sails, the same approaches real agencies are testing.

03Community

Campaigns with the people who run the town

The club ran a flea market and signature campaign against school violence, donating proceeds to counselling for affected students; anti-smoking and anti-drinking campaigns with the public health centre; and CPR training with the local fire station. In autumn a community walking event doubled as a lake cleanup.

04Recognition

A commendation, and a partnership

In July 2025 the Korea HQ of the Bright Society International Club, an NGO with UN ECOSOC special consultative status, commended him for social contribution. The club's newest programme is a partnership with an NGO supporting children with developmental disabilities.

Reflection

Service that depends on one enthusiastic person ends when they graduate. The work was in making each programme someone else's habit.
