In brief

The problem
Boarding-school life is long hours at a desk. Exercise is easy to drop when it depends on motivation alone.
The spark
In his first year Wonjun began a daily personal running routine and started sharing his times. Classmates asked to join.
The outcome
A 35-member running group, with his own 1 km time down from 5:50 to the mid-4-minute range and the group average down from 6:10 to the mid-5-minute range.

Method

How it was done, step by step.

  1. 1Show up dailyA personal routine first, before anyone else joined.
  2. 2Share the numbersPosting running records so progress was visible and contagious.
  3. 3Night sessionsRegular group runs after evening study.

01Consistency

A habit that became a culture

The group grew because the numbers were public and the runs were regular. Nobody had to be the fastest; the point was to keep showing up, and the times followed.

The data

Results, rebuilt from the original slides.

1 km pace, minutes per kmLower is faster. The later values are described in the record as the mid-4 and mid-5 minute ranges; plotted here at 4:30 and 5:30.
